2011 Annual Celebration – “Celebrating the U”

Several hundred alumni and friends enjoyed a great evening at the 2011 Annual Celebration on Tuesday, May 3. After a buffet reception in the Carlson School of Management Atrium, guests made the short walk to the Ted Mann Concert Hall.

Entertainment by student-led ensemble groups and stories about how alumni contribute to advance excellence at the University of Minnesota were followed by a tribute to outgoing President Bob Bruininks and First Lady Susan Hagstrum for their years of dedication to the U.

Attendees learned first-hand about the tremendous effect that University research has on the world through a feature video on John E. Wagner, M.D. A specialist in pediatric cancer, his research on blood and marrow transplantation and work on stem cell transplants to treat severe forms of a rare skin disease is just one example of the inspirational research that happens each day.

The Alumni Association also recognized the value of alumni giving back to current students and expanding their experience beyond the classroom. Marjorie Mangine and Rodney Matthews shared their story about the value of a mentoring relationship and the opportunities that exist within the Mentor Connection program, a collaborative program between the Alumni Association and college-based alumni societies.

One of the many highlights of the night was First Lady Susan Hagstrum’s narration of President Bruininks’ nine-year journey as the 15th president of the University of Minnesota. Combined, the tandem has served the University for more than 50 years, and they have undoubtedly left a lasting mark within the University community.

The program concluded with one last salute to the president as he led the U of M Marching Band in “The Minnesota Rouser” to end the night.
