Mentor a Student

The Mentor Connection works in collaboration with college-based alumni societies, University departments and community organizations. Currently, there are 15 different mentor programs participating in the Alumni Association Mentor Connection. Apply to be a mentor by selecting your collegiate mentor program. 

History
Since the early-90's, the Mentor Connection has matched more than 10,000 students with alumni or friends of the University of Minnesota.  These relationships have provided a learning experience for students outside the classroom and provide them insight to career options after college. 

The Mentoring Relationship
Mentor programs are housed and managed within the collegiate units and their alumni societies.  Each fall, students and alumni are matched based on applications and career preferences.  The program concludes in April with the annual Mentor Appreciation event.  Mentoring Relationships are intended to
  • be professional in nature;
  • help students make the transition from an academic environment to the world of work;
  • offer an opportunity for professional development, networking and an exchange of ideas between experienced professionals and the next generation of leaders

The University of Minnesota Alumni Association, in collaboration with the collegiate unit mentor programs, provides programming and events for mentors and students throughout the year.  The Mentor Connection events are listed below and we encourage both mentors and students to attend.

Mentor Connection Reception Etiquette and Networking Event

Do you want to learn the etiquette of navigating through a reception event?  Join the Mentor Connection and facilitator Stevie Ray, Executive Director of Stevie Ray's Improv Company, in this fun, social event. 

Mentor Appreciation Dinner

The Mentor Connection invites all mentors and students participating in any University of Minnesota mentor program to attend this festive event. Please join us on Thursday, April 22, at the McNamara Alumni Center.

Alumni Annual Celebration with Katie Couric
